OCD is a term that stands for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. This is a condition that regularly disrupts a person’s life by inducing persistent thoughts and/or makes them do certain things.
As you can tell by the term ‘Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder,’ there are two ways that this condition affects people. The first is through obsessions.
Types of obsessive thoughts or mental images :
- Gruesome
- Stressfull
- Disturbing
- Sexual
- Negative
- Painfull
Many of the thoughts and images are not only unsettling, the sufferers of OCD usually have to experience them quite frequently.
We have considered the obsessive thoughts that someone with OCD has to endure through. We will now briefly consider the compulsive actions that come with the condition. OCD can manifest itself in a variety of ways that people near the person with the condition can notice.
Examples of compulsive actions:
- Constantly checking their phone
- Regularly rearranging their desk
- The need to arrange clothes in their closet by color
- Not leaving the house until they look exactly how they want
- Making their room as symmetrical as possible
As you can see, OCD can certainly negatively affect those that have it. Also, due to its compulsiveness-inducing traits, it can cause people to take up much time in their lives by doing seemingly trivial things.
Sometimes, people without Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder will say that they have it. For example, someone might say to someone else ‘Wow, your room is really clean.’ To this, the person might respond ‘Yeah, I like to have it in order. I think I have OCD.’
You may have heard of OCD through your daily life because of social media, television, or just in conversation. However, as we have noted, much of the time when someone says they have Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, they do not. Those who do have it live their lives with a difficult challenge.
