The phrase ‘carpe diem’ literally means ‘pluck the day’ in Latin, though a more common translation is ‘seize the day.’ It conveys the thought of making the most of each moment.

‘Carpe Diem’ was most likely first used by Horace in his work known as the ‘Odes.’ In it, Horace writes the phrase “carpe diem quam minimum credula postero,” which means “pluck the day, trusting as little as possible in the next one.

A similar sentiment is found in the words of John Wooden; “Make each day your masterpiece.” Both this and ‘carpe diem’ give a sense of determination and diligence.
