obviously

When we say that something is obvious, it means that it is very easy to understand. Like many adjectives, obvious has an adverb form and it is obviously formed by adding /ly/, which makes it obviously.

In spoken English, obviously is an expression when we want to emphasize that we already knew what the speaker was saying. Also, when we are the one talking, and we are sure that our listeners knew the subject, but we still want to say it, we use obviously.

Example of Obviously in sentences:
  • Students are obviously required to study hard.
  • They obviously want the people to know that they are in a relationship as they posted many pictures of them on their Facebook accounts.

Dialog:

Anna: Hi mom. Can I go to the beach with my friends this weekend? It is a long weekend; you and dad are very busy and I will be bored here at home.

Mom: Anna, obviously, we want you to be happy, but I don’t trust your friends. It seems obvious that they don’t have positive influence on you.

Anna: Mom, you always tell me that. You always criticize my friends. It is painfully obvious that you don’t trust me and you don’t want me to be happy.

Mom: Anna, you are still a kid, I and you dad are here to protect you. Why can you not see that we clearly want the best for you?

Anna: You know what mom, whatever. I will stay home and watch movies this weekend.

Mom: You can’t watch movies all day. I will need you to clean the house and you also have to study for your next week’s exam.

Anna: Well, mom. It really sounds obvious that you just want me to clean the house. Why didn’t you tell me that in the first place? Why did you have to criticize my friends?

Mom: Yes, of course. We need you to help us and you need to get good grades.

Anna: Okay. I understand. Sorry mom.

Mom: Anna, without a doubt, we love you so much. I and your dad are working hard so you can have a bright future. It’s blatantly obvious that we only want what’s best for you.

Anna: Yes mom. I know, sorry for my behavior.

Mom: You are still young. You obviously don’t know everything, so I hope that you listen to me and your dad.
